Australian Televisions...
Good evening and Welcome to television, these were the
first words spoken by Bruce Gyngell on 16 September 1956 in
Sydney. Since then Australian television has come a long way.
Now there are LCDs, plasma televisions, digital televisions,
projection televisions and high definition televisions. The
first television licences in Australia were issued in 1955 in
Sydney and Melbourne. The first programme to be broadcasted
in Australia was the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956. At the
end of the year, only 1% of Sydney and 5% of Melbourne residents
owned a television because they were not very cheap. In 1975,
the colour television came to Australia for the first time.
Now, more than 99% of Australian residents own at least one
