LCDs Invented...

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. Liquid crystals are basically organic
substances that reflect light when voltage is applied. James Fergason was
the inventor of the improved version of the LCD or liquid crystal display. George
Heilmeier's LCD used dynamic scattering method or DSM where an electric charge
is applied to rearrange the molecules so that the light is scattered. This was worked on and improved by James Fergason.

LCDs Explained...

An LCD television is basically a flat panel that consists of two layers. They are made up of glass-like material that are polarized and glued together. There is a coat of a special polymer on one of the layers that helps the liquid crystals to hold together. The crystals cannot produce their own light. This is the reason an external source like a florescent bulb is required to create the image on the LCD that can then be viewed by everyone. The LCDs can be made very thin. The result, it can be put

anywhere, on a wall, on a table, on a cabinet, on a dresser or on a desk without any difficulty. LCDs are available in flat wide screens or floor models. With some changes, the concept of LCD can also be used in rear-projection televisions. The LCD technology is not used only in TVs but it is also used in everything from digital watches to laptops.
